Mothers in Academia: "Swings" in Performance

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

For female academics with children, the enculturation of male-dominated institutional practices leaves them one of two equally punishing roles to play: the ultimate “swing” who must energetically balance the demands of playing multiple roles, or the “untouchable,” never to make the cast list.
Donning one mask as caregiver, another as teacher, and still another as researcher can make the mother in academia feel that she is unable to fully devote herself. This is, of course, assuming she can secure the job. This panel dissects the performance expectations of female professors with children, what their diversity and experiences bring to the academic setting, and how these intersect with the staging of the university as a brand to the outside world.
